Part I, Administration

Responsible Officers

This program is administered by the CEC Executive Director.

Award of the CEC Certificate of Merit or the CEC Championship.

The Chinook’s owner is responsible for providing a completed application, copies of all applicable documentation supporting the award and the required fee.  All profits from this program will go to support the open online Chinook Health Database located at http://www.chinookhealth.org.  All documents must be received by the CEC in one package. The CEC does not keep prior submissions on file and returns all incomplete or inaccurate packages for correction to the owner.  If the owner continues to submit incomplete or inaccurate packages, they will forfeit the enclosed fee to assist the CEC cover expenses of repeat return mailings.  Determination of forfeiture of the fee is at the discretion of the Executive Director.

When an owner submits a complete package, the Executive Director will authenticate completion of all requirements and award the appropriate CEC Certificate of Merit or CEC Championship. The Executive Director keeps a cumulative log of all CEC awards presented and logs the appropriate information, to include, but not limited to:

Chinook’s name

Chinook’s registration number

Chinook’s birth date

Owner’s name

Owner’s address

Date of award

CEC Certificate of Merit or CEC Championship awarded

Contributing Titles, Certificates and Degrees

The CEC Executive Director will prepare the appropriate certificate after all information is logged.

Certificates

The CEC Executive Director prepares and signs the certificate, then forwards it to the Chinook owner.

Program Changes

YEARLY REVIEW: Any recommendations for change should be submitted through the CEC Executive Direction. The Executive Director will determine appropriate action.  The CEC Executive Director will review the program yearly. The CEC will implement any changes to program on the first day of the calendar year.

EXCEPTION: If new medical discoveries or continued genetic study reveal genetically passed health problems for which breeding Chinooks should test clear, then the Executive Director will take immediate, appropriate action to adjust Championship requirements. The Executive Director can add these additional health requirements any time they feel it is in the best interest of the breed. This wilt not effect awards already presented by the CEC.

Part I, Awards Based on Performance

Certificates of Merit

Philosophy: Chinooks who hold a CEC Certificate of Merit personify the working ability of the Chinook. Progression through the Merit Program is intended to demonstrate first, and most importantly, the sledding ability of the Chinook breed and secondarily their versatility as a working dog. Any Chinook with average abilities, whose person is willing to dedicate themselves to a serious training program, should be able to progress through the initial levels of this program. However, only those Chinooks that clearly surpass the norm of working ability and performance as a sleigh dog will be able to progress through the top levels of this program. The highest levels of this program require significant dedication from the Chinook’s person. To receive a CEC Certificate of Merit, the dog must be a U.K.C. Registered Chinook, a U.K.C. LP Registered Chinook or a CEC Registered Chinook Cross, and attain the required Merit Points. The CEC awards three levels of Certificates of Merit:

Level 1: Initial Level

CEC Certificate of Merit - 10 Merit Points.

A Chinook holding an initial level certificate demonstrates merit through exceptional working ability and other superior attributes. This can include advanced levels of working ability in a single area or performance as a trained companion with multiple talents

Level 2: National Level

CEC Certificate of National Merit - 15 Merit Points.

CEC Certificate of National Merit with Honors - 20 Merit Points.

A Chinook holding a national level certificate significantly exceeds the ability of most trained working dogs. To attain this level the Chinook must perform in a variety of working tasks or be an experienced sleigh dog. A Chinook receiving this award with honors epitomizes the highest levels of versatility or advanced sledding experience.

Level 3: World Level

CEC Certificate of World Merit - 25 Merit Points with at least 8 earned through sledding awards.

CEC Certificate of World Merit with Honors -30 Merit Points with at least 16 earned through sledding awards; one award must be the C-WLDX or C-WTDX.

A Chinook holding a world level certificate is a working sleigh dog. To attain this level the Chinook must demonstrate it is a superior working dog with sledding ability. A Chinook receiving the Certificate of World Merit with Honors is clearly the elite of performing Chinook sleigh dogs. This top award is difficult to earn and is rarely awarded.

Part II, Combination Awards: Based on Conformation, Performance and Health

Championships

Philosophy: CEC Champions personify the very best in the Chinook breed.  Each CEC Chinook Championship is awarded by using a combination of awards, titles, degrees and certificates already earned. This shows the ultimate versatility in the breed while still recognizing the Chinook’s purpose is that of a sleigh dog first and foremost. CEC Champions are recognized as the Chinooks that future generations should best come from. That is why the CEC Championship is only awarded after a comprehensive health

and personality examination. The Championship is awarded when proof of completion is presented to the CEC and is given a health date within a year of a current CERF exam. To update and add successive years, a new AVCO exam or CERF certificate must be produced. This will ensure that all possible precautions have been taken to ensure each of these Champions are appropriate for breeding. In addition, the CEC recognizes the Chinook should be more than just a show dog in the ring. Each CEC Championship is awarded only after the Chinook also demonstrates working ability.

Only U.K.C. Registered Chinooks and AKC/FSS Chinooks are eligible at this time. U.K.C. LP Chinooks and COA Chinook Crosses are not eligible since they do not compete in the conformation ring. To qualify for Championships, all of the following requirements must be met:

1.         Be a U.K.C. registered Chinook or AKC/FSS listed Chinook,

2.         Obtain a title from List Ia or two titles from List Ib,

3.         Successfully complete (successfully meaning that no genetic illness, disease or weakness shown) all medical and personality tests listed on List 3, and

4.         Attain the required Certificate of Merit

Level 1: Basic Level

CEC Champion - Certificate of Merit required

Level 2: National Level

CEC National Champion - Certificate of National Merit required

CEC National Grand Champion - Certificate of National Merit with Honors required

Level 3: World Level

CEC World Champion - Certificate of World Merit required

CEC World Grand Champion - Certificate of World Merit with Honors required

Appendix I (Titles, Degrees, Certificates, Health Requirements and Corresponding Merit Points)

This list includes all titles recognized for use toward the CEC Merit program and the CEC Championship program. The CEC awards Merit Points when a Chinook is certified successful in an area, by receiving a recognized title, degree or certificate. The CEC endorses the listed titles as activities that enhance the partnership between a Chinook and its person. Merit points are based on the added value the CEC feels that area contributes to the Chinook dog’s fundamental purpose--sledding; and secondarily the Chinook dog’s strength as a versatile working dog. The CEC only awards points once for performance in a single area, even if the Chinook earns titles for the same level of performance through multiple organizations. [Example: If a U.K.C. Chinook earns a CD Obedience Title (ARBA) it is awarded 4 Merit Points for completing a title under Level 1 Obedience. If that same Chinook adds a U-CD Obedience Title (U.K.C.), no additional Merit Points are awarded because that Chinook has already completed a title at that level]

Naming Conventions for Text or Certificates

CEC Certificate of Merit

Each Chinook awarded a CEC Certificate of Merit will have it listed after the Chinook’s name, with a coma separating the name with the normal convention for listing the Chinook’s name with all appendices included.

EXAMPLE: If a Chinook (ex: Perry Greene Sitka) received a CEC Certificate of Merit from participation in Obedience and Agility, the name would read: Perry Greene Sitka, CEC Certificate of Merit: Obedience, Agility. If listed under a picture or on a plaque, the name may be written in two lines with the coma deleted:

Perry Greene Sitka

CEC Certificate of Merit: Obedience, Agility

As the Chinook attains additional awards, the descriptive title of that area will be added,

EXAMPLE: If Sitka also becomes a certified hearing dog, the name would then read: Perry Greene Sitka, CEC Certificate of Merit: Obedience, Agility, Hearing.

For consistency, all areas will be listed in the same order they are presented on List 2.

NOTE: Both a CEC Championship, with award date(s), and CEC Certificate of Merit are listed (in that order). A semicolon will separate the Championship and Certificate of Merit areas. When the Championship has multiple dates, due to updated health certification, the dates are separated by a comma if typed or represented by a date sticker added onto the existing certificate,

EXAMPLE:

CH. Perry Greene Sitka U-CD, CEC World Grand Champion; Certificate of Merit:  Sledding, Obedience

or

U-CD CH Perry Greene Sitka U-CD

CEC World Grand Champion 1996, 1997

Certificate of World Merit with Honors: Sledding, Obedience

Only the highest level CEC Certificate of Merit and the highest level CEC Championship earned are listed.
